But in general, most jobs follow a similar path. If you haven’t used AE at all for for a long time, this is helpful to refresh your memory on how to use it.

EXPRESSIONS

OVERVIEW

Expressions are one of the most powerful features in After Effects, but a lot of people don’t use them because they seem intimidating. It takes a little time to get the hang of using them, but it’s worth the time. Once you learn how to set up behaviors and controls without having to do tons of manual keyframing, you’ll be much faster and more efficient in AE. Look at it this way - Expressions are to After Effects as TweenMax is to Flash.
To get started, there are actually code hints provided (see below) for commonly used expressions. These are perfect for beginners to expressions. It will help to go in there and experiment with them.
Expressions are applied to keyframeable properties (like postion, scale, rotation etc.). They can be really basic and simple, and can also be very advanced - the possibilites are endless. To get started and understand how they work, read this helpful article on the basics of Expressions:
